How to Play
Everything you need to win — controls, modes, power-ups, and tips.
The goal
Neon Pong is a two-paddle game. You control the paddle on your side and try to bounce the ball past your opponent to score a point, while stopping the ball from getting past you. The first side to reach the target score — 5, 7, or 11 points, your choice — wins the match. Miss the ball and the other side scores.
Controls
You can move your paddle however feels best for your device:
- MouseMove the cursor up and down over the play field — your paddle follows it
- TouchPress and drag anywhere on the play field (phone or tablet)
- W / SMove your paddle up and down with the keyboard
- ↑ / ↓Arrow keys also move your paddle (Player 1 / online)
- SpaceStart a match, or play again after one ends
- MMute or unmute the sound effects
- EscQuit the current match and return to the menu
In local 2-player, Player 1 uses W / S and Player 2 uses the ↑ / ↓ arrow keys. On a touchscreen, each player can use their own half of the screen.
Game modes
- 1 Player vs CPU — pick a difficulty (Easy, Normal, or Hard) and play against the computer. Easy is forgiving and great for learning; Hard reacts quickly and rarely misses.
- Local 2-Player — two people on one device (offered on tablets, where there's room for both). One takes the left paddle, the other the right.
- Online — Quick Match — tap it and you'll be paired with the next player searching anywhere in the world. No code needed.
- Online — Host / Join — to play a specific friend, Host a game to get a four-letter code, share it, and have your friend Join with that code.
How the ball works
Two things make rallies interesting:
- It speeds up. Every time the ball hits a paddle it gets a little faster, so long rallies become a real test of reflexes.
- You control the angle. Where the ball hits your paddle decides where it goes. Hit it with the center of the paddle to send it back fairly straight; catch it near the top or bottom edge to fire it off at a sharp angle and wrong-foot your opponent.
Power-ups
With power-ups switched on, glowing pickups appear on the field during play. Knock the ball into one to set it off — the effect goes to whoever last touched the ball:
- Multiball (+1) — adds extra balls to the field at once, for glorious chaos.
- Grow (▲) — makes your paddle taller for a few seconds, so you can cover more of the goal.
- Shrink (▼) — shrinks your opponent's paddle, opening up gaps to aim at.
- Speed (») — briefly cranks up the ball's speed for a frantic burst.
Prefer the pure classic experience? Turn power-ups Off on the menu and it's straight, traditional Pong.
Tips to win
- Don't just block — aim. Use the edges of your paddle to angle the ball away from where your opponent is standing.
- Watch the speed. After a long rally the ball is moving fast, so start repositioning early rather than reacting late.
- Race for power-ups. Being the last to touch the ball before it hits a pickup means the effect lands in your favor.
- Against the CPU, mix up your angles — predictable shots are easy for it to read on higher difficulties.
